Comments from our current trainees on their decision to train to teach with us:
Rebecca: School Direct Distance
WCTSA was the best decision for my teacher training as it has allowed me to learn ‘on the job’ and put the theory from the taught PGCE aspect of the course into practice. Being in a school from day one meant that I was able to integrate into the school environment more smoothly and ensured that I gained as much school experience as possible. The PGCE year was tough but with the support and help from the staff at WCTSA, it has been manageable, and the staff have gone out of their way to make my year as stress free as possible. The advice, support and mentoring from all my mentors throughout the course has been invaluable in developing me as a teacher. The structure of the course at WCTSA ensures that you are eased into teaching slowly but are always being pushed out of your comfort zone, to make sure you excel and become the best teacher you can be. Having the weekly study days to meet up with the other trainees has been brilliant as you are able to share your weekly challenges and successes as well as working together on the online University tasks. I would not hesitate in recommending the School Direct route, especially with WCTSA.
Lucy: School Direct Distance
The WCTSA was my firm choice for my teacher training: it has a great reputation, works with outstanding schools and supports the individual. The ‘distance’ course has worked excellently for me as getting school experience from the start of the academic year has allowed me to quickly find my teaching style whilst constantly learning within the school environment. Having one day a week to complete the University of Exeter modules has been great, as you can work alongside other trainees and have a day off teaching to recover from the busy working week!
Both of my placement schools have shown an insight into the contemporary challenges of education, whilst offering amazing opportunities and the rewards of deciding to pursue a career in teaching. The support from both of my PSTs, mentors and the staff at WCTSA has been exceptional. Even when you have tough lessons, and the workload feels humongous (!), all of your colleagues and other trainees are there to guide you and offer a helping hand.
The advice I would give to future trainees is to try your best and to ask for support when needed. The training year will challenge you and be demanding, but if you put your effort into it and want to make a difference, there is nothing as rewarding as the relationships made and the pupil impact you have.
