The School Experience Programme (SEP) offers a short school classroom-based experience to people who are considering a career in teaching and is vital for anyone hoping to enter Initial Teacher Training (ITT).
The School Experience Programme includes lesson observations and an opportunity to talk to teachers about day-to-day life in a school. You will gain an insight into varied, creative and innovative teaching styles and discover how lessons are designed to personalise learning for individual students. The Programme will also provide you with some guidance on the subject knowledge that you will be expected to deliver for your chosen subject, as well as general teaching pedagogy.
If you meet the eligibility criteria then you will be able to have up to 10 days school experience in certain priority subjects – Biology, Chemistry, French, Geography, Mathematics, and Physics. The cost of a Disclosure and Barring Services (DBS) check will be free.
The eligibility criteria for registering onto this programme are:
- you intend to apply for initial teacher training this year (for 2017/2018 entry)
- you have Maths and English GCSE at Grade C or above (or equivalent)
- you have, or are expected to have, a minimum of a 2:2 in a degree which is relevant to the subject you wish to teach, or sufficient A level qualifications to enable you to progress with your application with some subject knowledge enhancement (SKE) support if appropriate.
- have had less than 10 days school experience in English state schools in the last 12 months.
This programme is open to candidates in non- priority subjects or to those individuals who do not yet meet the eligibility criteria above. The duration of the programme will vary from one day up to 10 days. After the initial day placement, there may be the opportunity to undertake further placement days of varying number based on the subject area and your commitment to apply for our School Direct Programme with the WCTSA. In a non- priority subject you will need to pay for your own DBS check, unless you have signed up for the DBS Update Service.
Subjects include: Art, Business Studies, Design & Technology, English, Geography, German, History, Media Studies, Music, Physical Education, Religious Education.
